Russian developers have created an application for everyday communication between deaf and hearing people

MOSCOW. A mobile application for smartphones and tablets has been developed in Novosibirsk, which helps in communication between deaf and hearing people. The sign language translates speech into sign language, and uses a computer speech synthesizer for feedback.

"Surdophone" allows you to recognize the interlocutor’s speech and translate it into Russian sign language. From my side, deaf interlocutor typing text, which is voiced by a computer speech synthesizer, it says in the app description.

“It’s very strange for us, what in the modern world, where everyone has a mobile phone, people who are deaf or hard of hearing must use paper and pen. That's why two years ago, choosing directions for your company's work, we settled on this project, which we are studying together with a professor from NSTU", – told Academ.infodeveloper of the "Surdophone" application Evgeniy Geisler.

Sign language interpreters from the Novosibirsk branch of the All-Russian Society of the Deaf worked together with the team of programmers to create the application..

The developers plan to translate the program into English and Japanese sign languages, addition of pictographic function, that is, when people will be able to draw, and the application will recognize the picture and either voice it, or show with gestures. According to the authors of the application, not only deaf people can use it, but also, eg, people, stroke survivors, Academ.info reports.
