The camp operates from 13 by 25 July 2018 year at the sports base "Triathlon". One of the organizers of the shift was NROOI "Invatur".
The Election Commission of the Nizhny Novgorod Region over 10 has been closely cooperating with the public organization "Invatur" for years .
Invatur – is our permanent partner, our advisor. Activists from the organization constantly tell us, where there are problems - there are no ramps or special lifts, too high angle of inclination of these very ramps - together with the heads of municipal districts we are trying to solve these problems, – Oksana Kislitsyna, Chairman of the Electoral Commission of the Nizhny Novgorod Region, shares her experience of cooperation. – That is why we are here today with colleagues.”.
Together with the public organization Invatur, making polling stations accessible to wheelchair users is one of the tasks of the election commission of the Nizhny Novgorod region.
“I have been living in a boarding school for wheelchair users for three years already.. Almost said goodbye to the outside world. For such, like me, wheelchair users, in an unadapted environment it is difficult to be an active citizen. In the camp I first learned, that you can move on the rear wheels along the stairwell", – says camp participant Sergei Nazarov.
The Election Commission of the Nizhny Novgorod Region hopes, that wheelchair skills, received during training, help our citizens with disabilities get to the polling station on their own.
Trainings in the camp are held three times a day for 1,5 hours daily.
First, what wheelchair users are taught - how to fall correctly. The second is how to use a mobile wheelchair in an urban environment, overcoming difficult obstacles - stairs, borders, tram rails. And the most important thing, what they teach in the camp - overcoming inner fear.
Seeing your own eyes, as people with disabilities, gathering all the willpower into a fist, through tears, pain and life's difficulties smile, overcoming the next obstacle on a wheelchair on their own, understand, that nothing is impossible.
Hopefully, that with the support of the public organization "Invatur", heads of municipalities and volunteers, together we will be able to create comfortable access to polling stations for wheelchair users.
