13 November - International Day of the Blind

13 November all over the world celebrate the International Day of the Blind, memorable date, dedicated to an outstanding person, teacher and organizer Valentin Gayui, man, who opened the world's first school for blind children. This day is a worldwide date, designed to draw the attention of society to those, who lost their sight forever and found themselves in a difficult life situation.

Gayui used his method of teaching the blind, through the font he invented for the blind - "uncial". Despite financial difficulties, Gayui managed to create a printing house at the school and published in it several books for the blind, printed in "uncial" in relief-linear type. These were the first books for the blind on Earth.. From these books, the blind people learned until the appearance of the six-point braille. Valentin Gayui also showed himself in Russia, where is he in St. Petersburg in 1807 founded the first educational institution in the country for people with complete or partial loss of vision.

Today, in the changed world, the attitude towards blind people is also changing. Visually impaired, public organizations of people with disabilities receive increasing support from the state, Russian President V. IN. Putin. International Day of the Blind reminds of visually impaired people, their successes, achievements, needs and problems. On this day in Russia, the activists of the All-Russian Society of the Blind are holding seminars, round tables, concerts, sports and rehabilitation activities, dedicated to various aspects of life and everyday life of the blind, their integration into society.
